How long does it take to ship a parcel internationally? It depends on three factors: how quickly your shipment is picked up, which carrier and service you choose, and whether customs clearance is involved. Within the EU, cross-border shipping is almost as simple as domestic. Outside the EU it requires a bit more preparation, but with the right documentation it runs smoothly.

Delivery times by service level
Total shipping time consists of two parts: pickup speed and transit time. Here's what to expect per service level:

Important: these times apply from pickup. Total lead time also depends on when you book and how quickly the carrier collects. Additionally, the location in the destination country is crucial. Pickup speed
When booking an international shipment, pickup speed determines how quickly your parcel enters the carrier network.
Same-day pickup
Most express carriers (DHL Express, FedEx, UPS) collect the same day, provided you book before the cut-off time. The cut-off depends on your location relative to the sorting centre. Close by? You can book until late afternoon. Wuunder shows the exact cut-off time per carrier for your pickup address.
Next business day pickup
Book after the cut-off and the carrier collects the next business day. This adds one day to your total lead time. Plan shipments as early as possible, or consider a fixed daily pickup if you ship internationally regularly.
Self drop-off at a service point
Some carriers, including UPS and DPD, offer parcelshops where you can drop off shipments yourself. Note: check whether the carrier has already collected from that location for the day. Many parcelshops are emptied early. If you're too late, your shipment enters the network the next day.

Express vs Economy vs Postal: when to choose what?
Express (e.g. DHL Express, FedEx, UPS, TNT)
Choose express when speed is critical. Next-day delivery to major European cities, 2-3 days intercontinental. Express carriers operate their own aircraft and have dedicated sorting hubs at airports. Express carriers are quicker than airfreight companies who consolidate freight before they ship them. They offer time-definite options (delivery before 9:00, 10:30 or 12:00) and priority services.
Note: DHL Express is a different carrier from DHL eCommerce. DHL Express is a premium air freight service, DHL eCommerce is a parcel carrier that's slower but more affordable for cross-border.
Standard parcel (e.g. DHL eCommerce, DPD, GLS, PostNL)
Parcel carriers offer a good balance between speed and price within Europe. They use road transport instead of air freight, making them cheaper than express but often only 1-2 days slower. Ideal for e-commerce shipments within the EU.
Economy and postal (e.g. Asendia, Spring GDS, Maersk eDelivery, PostNL international)
The most affordable option for lightweight shipments (up to 2 kg and max shoebox size) to distant destinations. Delivery times vary widely: from 5 business days (Europe) to 4 weeks (Asia, South America). Tracking is often limited with postal services. Choose this when speed isn't a requirement, the cost of your goods are low and shipping costs are important.
