You have contracts with PostNL, DHL and DPD. Perhaps also with GLS, UPS or a pallet carrier like TransMission. Each carrier has its own rate structure, surcharges and strengths per lane. But who compares per shipment which carrier and service is the best choice?
Manual comparison doesn't work at 100 orders per day, let alone 10,000. And your checkout probably shows fixed shipping costs instead of the actual rates from your contracts. The result: you overpay on routes where another carrier is sharper, and your customer doesn't see what's really possible.

Why manual comparison doesn't work
Most businesses with multiple carrier contracts choose their carrier by habit: "NL goes via PostNL, Germany via DHL." But rate structures change constantly:
Rates are dynamic
Carriers adjust rates quarterly or even monthly. Fuel surcharges change per week (express carriers) or per month (parcel carriers) and run up to 30-56% in 2026. Weight tiers differ by carrier. What was the cheapest carrier and service to France last week may not be today.
Surcharges are unpredictable
Besides the base rate, carriers charge fuel surcharges, remote area surcharges (€2 to €30), residential surcharges, oversize surcharges and peak season surcharges. These rarely appear in your standard shipping rules and only show up on the invoice. More on international shipping costs.
Every carrier has a different focus
PostNL is strong on (letterbox) parcels NL. DPD often on larger shipments. DHL eCommerce is often cheaper on smaller shipments. Spring GDS and Asendia win on lightweight cross-border shipments. TransMission and Mainfreight for pallets. No single carrier is cheapest on all routes and all services.
Weight tiers cloud the picture
Your DHL contract has different weight and volume tiers than your DPD contract. Per shipment you'll need to make choices. Without real-time comparison, you miss those tipping points.

- A customer selects DPD Business at checkout for a residential address. The warehouse discovers it's not possible. The order picker must manually switch to another service, reprint the label, and the customer may receive a different delivery time than promised.
- A customer chooses parcelshop delivery, but the parcel is too large for a parcelshop. The warehouse must correct the order, print a different label, and inform the customer.
- A parcel of 135 cm length is booked via a carrier that accepts max 130 cm. The carrier refuses the parcel at pickup, or charges an extra handling surcharge.
These are manual corrections by order pickers that cost time, cause errors and reduce customer satisfaction. At hundreds of orders per day, this adds up quickly.

The majority of shoppers expect to see shipping costs before they reach checkout. Yet most webshops show fixed shipping costs ("€4.95 standard, €9.95 express") that aren't linked to the actual rates from their contracts.
This works both ways. Charge a flat shipping rate for a product that ships as a letterbox parcel, and you lose conversions: shoppers compare, and increasingly AI shopping agents do it for them, sorted by actual delivered price. Set the flat rate too low, and you lose margin on every order.

Comparing shipping costs in WMS and ERP
The checkout is the start, but the actual carrier selection often happens in the warehouse. Your WMS or ERP system determines which label gets printed. If that system doesn't compare, you ship by habit.

Multi-colli and pallet logic

Customs documents automatically
For non-EU shipments, Wuunder automatically generates the required customs documents (CN23, commercial invoices). If the carrier supports paperless customs, all data is transmitted digitally to the carrier, which can then automatically forward it to customs. This saves attaching these documents to the shipment.
Where are the biggest savings?
Most businesses don't save by negotiating lower rates (they already do that). They save by choosing the right carrier per shipment from their existing contracts:
1. Route optimisation
Carrier A is cheaper to Belgium, Carrier B to Germany, Carrier C to France. Without automatic comparison, you ship everything via the same carrier, even on routes where another contract is sharper. View the full overview of all carriers.
2. Service level matching
Not every shipment needs express. Wuunder automatically determines the right service level based on destination and delivery type: standard via DHL or DPD where possible, express via DHL Express, UPS or FedEx only where required. It's even possible to choose a specific carrier or service based on the recipient.
3. Packaging and shipment combination optimisation (PuzzlPack)
Most platforms calculate a rate based on one box. PuzzlPack goes much further: it analyses all possible shipment combinations per order.
Example: an order contains 2 items. PuzzlPack calculates two scenarios: both items together in 1 larger box, or each item separately in a smaller box. For each combination, the all-in shipping price is calculated (including surcharges and volumetric weight). Then the cheapest solution is automatically selected. It may be that one large box is cheaper than two small ones, or vice versa, depending on the carrier's rate tiers and volumetric weight thresholds.

4. Pickup point vs. home delivery
Delivery to a pickup point or locker is €0.25 to €0.50 cheaper per parcel than home delivery with many carriers. Show the option in your checkout and let your customer choose. More on parcelshop delivery per carrier.
5. Multi-colli vs. pallet (also via PuzzlPack)
For larger orders, PuzzlPack goes one step further: it not only calculates the optimal shipping packaging, but also compares whether shipping everything as a pallet via a pallet carrier is cheaper than multi-colli via a parcel carrier. Example:

6. Invoice auditing
Industry research shows 20% of carrier invoices contain errors and approximately 1.5% of all invoiced amounts are incorrect. At €150,000 in monthly transport costs, that's €4,500 to €10,500 per month in recoverable amounts. Weight corrections, wrong zone classifications, double surcharges and unjustified oversize penalties: costs you pay without receiving the corresponding service.

The shipping cost waterfall: 11 layers on top of the base rate
The base rate is where the calculation begins, not where it ends. A typical retailer can choose from 100,000 to 120,000 different rate rules when you count every carrier, service, country, weight class, volume tier and surcharge. No one can calculate that manually. Below is the complete shipping cost waterfall, layer by layer, with indicative amounts per carrier:
Layer 1: Base rate (weight, volume, destination)
The rate from your contract per weight class, volume tier and destination country. DHL charges based on weight and volume (litres), DPD primarily on weight with a length surcharge. The same shipment, two completely different rate structures.
Layer 2: Toll (per country)
Maut/toll differs per carrier and per route. Example for shipments to Germany:

Since 1 July 2026, the Netherlands also has a truck toll (€0.191 per kilometre). DPD charges approx. 1.3% (NL) and 0.8% (international), DHL approx. 1.7% and 1%.
Layer 3: Fuel surcharge (weekly or monthly variable)
The largest variable cost component. See the detailed tables in the fuel surcharge section below. In 2026: from 9.5% (Bpost) to 56% (TransMission). A shipment to a remote postcode in Germany costs at least €17.50 extra with DHL eCommerce. With PostNL: nothing. These differences are impossible to track manually.
Layer 6: Extra handling
Parcels that exceed standard dimensions but can still be transported:

PostNL charges €83 for a parcel that's out of specs. PuzzlPack prevents this by calculating all shipping combinations per order: it may be cheaper to send 2 smaller boxes that stay within specs than 1 large box that exceeds the limit and gets an €83 surcharge.
Layer 8: Insurance (damage/loss)
Standard carrier liability is limited: CMR conditions (~€10/kg domestic, ~€3.40/kg international). DPD offers standard coverage up to €520. DHL reimburses based on CMR conditions. Additional insurance at DHL costs €2.50 per shipment (up to €500).
Layer 9: Parcelshop/locker discount

Layer 11: Quality and performance (hidden costs)
Some of the biggest costs don't appear on your carrier's invoice. They're felt by your customer service:

The tables above are based on 100,000 shipments per year. At 500,000 shipments (approx. 2,000 per day) multiply each amount by 5. At 2.5 million shipments (approx. 10,000 per day) by 25. One percentage point difference in damage rate = €275,000 difference per year at 1 million shipments.

Fuel and energy surcharges by carrier (2026)
Fuel surcharges are the largest variable cost on top of your contract rates. They change per week (express carriers) or per month (parcel carriers) and can inflate your invoice by 10% to over 50%. Below are the actual surcharges applied in carrier selection.

What this means for your invoice
With a contract base rate of €5.00 per parcel, you pay in August 2026 at DHL Parcel NL: €5.00 + 23.5% = €6.18. The same parcel via DPD NL: €5.00 + 19% = €5.95. A difference of €0.23 per parcel, purely from the surcharge. At 3,000 parcels per day (approx. 60,000 per month), that's €13,800 difference per month.
Pallet carriers: the outliers
For pallet carriers, the impact is even bigger. TransMission charges a fuel surcharge of 49.4% in August 2026. On a pallet rate of €60.00, that's €29.64 extra: nearly half the base rate. Ben Becker sits at 30%. The difference between both on the same route can amount to thousands of euros per month.
This is exactly why automatic carrier selection per shipment is crucial: the cheapest carrier based on base rate is not always the cheapest all-in.
