Ship to Belgium with the right carrier for Flanders and Wallonia

Shipping to Belgium: your most important neighbouring country

Belgium is the most logical first step across the border for Dutch webshops. The same language in Flanders, short distances and no customs formalities. The Belgian parcel market processed approximately 408 million shipments in 2024 (source: BIPT), a 7.1% increase compared to 2023. Total sector revenue was €3.72 billion. bpost is market leader with 30-40% of parcel volume, followed by PostNL (10-20%), DPD (10-20%), UPS (10-20%) and GLS (5-10%).

Belgium has two major language regions with different expectations: Flemish consumers expect Dutch-language communication, Walloon consumers French. Wuunder lets you set the right checkout language, tracking emails and return instructions per language region.

Which carriers deliver to Belgium?

The Belgian market has a broad carrier mix. bpost dominates the domestic market, but for cross-border shipments from the Netherlands, DPD, PostNL and GLS are the most commonly used standard options. For express: DHL Express, UPS and FedEx.

What to consider when shipping to Belgium?

  • Bilingualism: Flemish customers expect Dutch, Walloon customers expect French. Ensure your checkout, tracking emails and return instructions are available in both languages. Brussels is officially bilingual.
  • No customs, but Belgian regulations apply: Belgium is an EU member state, so no customs formalities. However, specific Belgian rules around packaging waste (Fost Plus) apply if you are established in Belgium or place products on the Belgian market.
  • Saturday delivery: bpost and DPD deliver in Belgium on Saturdays to residential addresses.
  • Apartments and intercom systems: Belgian cities have many apartment buildings. Not all carriers ring the bell or deliver to upper floors. bpost has the most experience here.
  • Remote area surcharges: there are hardly any remote area surcharges in Belgium due to the compact geography. Wuunder compares this automatically.
  • Volumetric weight for express: UPS, FedEx and DHL Express invoice the higher of actual or volumetric weight.
  • Duties threshold: below £135 no import duties, but UK VAT applies. Above £135 import duties + VAT at import.

No customs, same market

Belgium is part of the EU single market and the Benelux. This means: no customs forms, no import duties and no VAT collection at the border. Your Belgian customer pays the Dutch VAT rate (up to the OSS threshold).

For Dutch webshops shipping to Belgium, there is no mandatory packaging registration as long as you are not established in Belgium and stay below the exemption threshold. If you scale up, registration with Fost Plus may become mandatory.

  • Carrier-mix strategy for BE: standard parcels via DPD or PostNL, pickup point deliveries via bpost or Mondial Relay, and urgent shipments via DHL Express or UPS.
