Automate your shipping to Italy

Sending parcels to Italy from your online store

Italian consumers spent €62.3 billion online in 2025, €40 billion of it on physical products (Osservatorio eCommerce B2c, Politecnico di Milano). With 35.2 million online shoppers and online still only 11% of product spending, there is plenty of headroom, especially in Beauty & Pharma (+10%) and Food & Grocery (+7%).

Nearly 80% of Italian shoppers have chosen home delivery at some point, and 11% have a parcel sent to an alternative address such as their workplace, against a European average of 6% (DPD). At the same time, the network of pickup points and lockers is growing fast. If you take Italy seriously, you offer both.

Which carriers do you connect for Italy?

Italian shoppers choose differently: nearly 80% have opted for home delivery at some point, and 11% have parcels sent to an alternative address such as their workplace, against a European average of 6% (DPD). No single carrier covers that. In Wuunder you connect them all to the same order flow.

DPD and BRT: one network to the Italian front door

In Italy, BRT is the DPD network: a DPD parcel from the Netherlands is delivered there by BRT. From the Netherlands that takes 3-5 working days to a home address and 6 working days to a pickup point, with a 1-hour time slot on delivery day. The recipient can still change the delivery, which helps in a market where many people ship to their office. Running a warehouse in Italy? Then you book BRT directly for domestic shipments too.

GLS: road network for heavier B2B shipments

GLS runs EuroBusinessParcel to Italy, up to 32 kg and with a second delivery attempt included. With FlexDelivery the recipient picks the day or delivery location.

UPS and DHL Express: express on your own contract

For rush orders and high basket values, book UPS Express Saver or DHL Express at your own rates. Pickup is booked as soon as the label exists. UPS Standard is the road option, with Access Points for collection and returns.

SDA (Poste Italiane) and InPost: pickup in your checkout

Via SDA you show Poste Italiane's 18,000+ Punto Poste points and lockers in your checkout. InPost adds 9,000+ points, including 4,000+ lockers open 24/7. Both are checkout options: your customer picks the pickup location.

Transit times to Italy by origin country

From the Netherlands

Carrier Service Transit NL-IT Parcel / Pallet
DPD Home / 2shop (Pickup Point) 3-5 working days Parcel
GLS EuroBusinessParcel 2-5 working days Parcel
DHL Express Worldwide Next working day Parcel & Pallet
UPS Express Saver Next working day Parcel

Examples from other origin countries

Wuunder has 300+ carrier connections in 190+ countries, and express carriers such as DHL Express, UPS, FedEx and TNT collect worldwide. So you ship to Italy from virtually any country where your stock sits. A few examples of standard services:

Origin Carrier Service Transit to Italy Parcel / Pallet
Belgium DPD Belgium DPD Classic 3-5 working days Parcel
Germany GLS Germany EuroBusinessParcel 3 working days Parcel
Germany DPD Germany DPD Classic 3-5 working days Parcel
Poland DPD Poland DPD CLASSIC / DPD Home 3-4 working days Parcel

Indicative for mainland Italy. Sicily, Sardinia and the smaller islands take longer, and not every service reaches everywhere. Wuunder knows which services cover each postcode and only shows options in your checkout that actually deliver. Shipping from several countries? You see per warehouse which carrier delivers the Italian order fastest or cheapest.

Pickup points and lockers in your checkout

Italy's pickup network doesn't live in post offices but in the tabaccheria around the corner. Poste Italiane built most of Punto Poste in affiliated tobacco shops, topped up with lockers at petrol stations, train stations and shopping centres.

  • Punto Poste (via SDA): 18,000+ pickup points and lockers, from Milan to Palermo
  • InPost: 9,000+ points, including 4,000+ lockers available 24/7
  • DPD Pickup: delivery to a pickup point from the Netherlands
  • UPS Access Points: collection and return drop-off

The Parcel Shop Locator puts all these networks on one map in your checkout. PuzzlPack calculates the box size per order, so customers only see lockers the parcel fits in. InPost lockers, for instance, take up to 41 x 38 x 64 cm and 25 kg.

Shipping from and within Italy

Running a warehouse or 3PL in Italy? Then you book DHL Express, UPS, FedEx and TNT from that address in the same platform as your Dutch or German shipments. For standard parcels within Italy you book BRT (formerly Bartolini), Italy's largest parcel carrier. Geopost, the parent company of DPD, took a majority stake (85%) in 2020, making BRT the Italian DPD network with 180 branches across the country. For rush orders there is DHL Express Domestic. Wuunder schedules the pickup as soon as the label exists.

Your Italian customers pick a Punto Poste point from SDA or an InPost locker in your checkout. Shipping from Italy to the rest of Europe? Wuunder compares those express services for every shipment, and customs documents for non-EU destinations are generated automatically. Tracking via Wuunder Track and returns via your returns portal work the same for every origin country.

Customs, VAT and exceptions

Italy (mainland, Sicily, Sardinia)

No customs: Italy is part of the EU single market. Selling to Italian consumers means charging the Italian standard VAT rate of 22% and reporting it through OSS.

Livigno

Livigno is in Italy but outside both the EU customs territory and the VAT area. For tax purposes, a shipment to Livigno is an export: you need an invoice and export documents.

Campione d'Italia, San Marino and Vatican City

Since 2020, Campione d'Italia is inside the EU customs territory but still outside the VAT area. For Campione d'Italia, Livigno, San Marino and Vatican City, DPD requires an original invoice in triplicate with the recipient's phone number. Wuunder generates customs documents automatically from your order data, so these postcodes need no manual work in your warehouse except attaching the document pouch with the invoices. Also read the CN22/CN23 customs guide.

Mandatory: environmental labelling on your packaging

Since 1 January 2023, all packaging that reaches consumers in Italy must carry an environmental label (etichettatura ambientale): the material code and sorting instructions for separate waste collection, in Italian. Selling online only? Then you may provide this information digitally, through a QR code or your product page (CONAI).

Tip: agree with your packaging supplier which codes go on your boxes and void fill, so your Italian volume is compliant from day one.

Automated carrier selection for Italy

  • No shipping rules to maintain: Wuunder compares every Italian shipment automatically on price, transit time, dimensions and weight, across 120,000+ preconfigured services. A light order to Milan and a 20 kg box to Palermo each get the right carrier. See compare shipping costs.
  • One box size, two wins: UPS and DHL Express charge on volumetric weight, so a scarf in an oversized box costs you money for nothing. PuzzlPack sets the box size upfront, and that same size decides whether your customer can still pick an InPost locker.
  • Your own contracts, one platform: already have rates with DPD, GLS, UPS or DHL Express? Contact our team to connect them.
